On the street that goes from Corso Umberto I to Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, there was a fountain that gave the name to the street: Via Mezzocannone.

Alfonso D’Aragona made this fountain built. It was formed by a basin, leaned on a wall to have horses refreshed by flowing water from a small pipe. On the basin top there was the statue of Alfonso II.

Under the statue it was written:

ALFONSUS FERDINANDI REGIS FILIUS ARAGONENSIS DUX CALABRIE EX IUSSU PATRIS FACIENDUM CURAVIT.

About the statue representation there are different opinions by Celan and Conforti. This one says that the statue was dated XV cent. And therefore it was Ferrante’s and not Alfonso’s representation. We cannot know true, because the statue doesn’t exist anymore.

Sulla strada che da corso Umberto I porta a piazza San Domenico Maggiore vi era una fontana che diede il nome alla strada: Via Mezzocannone.

Questa fontana fu fatta costruire da Alfonso d’Aragona. Essa era formata da una vasca, appoggiata al muro per abbeverare i cavalli con l’acqua che scorreva da una piccola cannula. La vasca era sormontata da una statua di Alfonso II.

Sotto la statua vi era questa scritta:

ALFONSUS FERDINANDI REGIS FILIUS ARAGONENSIS DUX CALABRIE EX IUSSU PATRIS FACIENDUM CURAVIT.

Le tesi del Celano sulla statua sono discordanti. Egli, infatti, asserisce che la statua era del XV secolo e quindi raffigurante Ferrante e non Alfonso. A noi purtroppo non è dato che riferire quanto è documentato perché la fontana non esiste più.

Sur la rue qui mène du « Corso Umberto I » à la Place San Domenico Maggiore il y avait une fontaine qui a donné le nom à la rue elle même: la fontaine de Mezzocannone.

Cette fontaine a été voulue par le Vice roi espagnol Alphonse d’Aragon.

Elle se composée d’une vasque adossée au mur qui servait à abreuver les chevaux avec l’eau qui coulait d’un petit tuyau.

La vasque était surmontée par une statue représentant d’Alphonse II.

Au pied de la statue une inscription:

ALFONSUS FERDINANDI REGIS FILIUS ARAGONENSIS DUX CALABRIE EX IUSSU PATRIS FACIENDUM CURAVIT.

Les thèses de Celano à son sujet sont discordantes. Il soutient que la statue, est datée du XVe siècle.

Par conséquent elle représente Ferrante d’Aragon et non Alphonse.

Malheureusement nous ne pouvons que nous en tenir qu'à ce qui est documenté, car de nos jours la fontaine n’existe plus.
